The Portland Timbers have their sights set on first place in the Western Conference and a spot in the 2020 Audi MLS Cup Playoffs when they face the last place from LA Galaxy on Wednesday night at Providence Park.

The Timbers (9W-5L-5D) fell 1-1 against Seattle Sounders, one point behind first-placed Sporting Kansas City, while the Galaxy (5W-9L-3D) lost 2-0 to rivals LAFC at Sunday at the Banc of California Stadium.

This is the third meeting this season. The Timbers bounced back from a 3-2 home loss on September 2 to beat the Galaxy 6-3 at Carson a month later, with Jeremy Ebobisse and Felipe Mora both scoring a brace.

Gio Savarese called it a “perfect game” until the Timbers conceded injury compensation for a second game in a row, only to settle for a 1-1 draw with the Sounders at CenturyLink Field on Thursday. He said disappointment over a Seattle tie was a positive sign.

“We’re here in Seattle, we’re playing against our rivals, we’re playing against a very good team and we drew in that game and we’re very disappointed because we felt we could have gotten more. That’s a good sign” said Savarese after the game. “It shows that we came here for something important to get three points. The fact that we ended the game disappointed with what happened in the end shows that we were convinced that our work would bring us the three points. “
